An essential component of any prevention program includes communication and collaboration
on campus and in the community. This includes community representation on the campus task
force, structured collaboration at the law enforcement level; and working with the local tavern
owners. In addition, efforts need to work with area schools to address common concerns.

III. CHECKLIST

Does your campus have a Town/Gown committee that addresses off-campus drinking
and violence?
Does the membership include campus representatives (including students), the Mayor
and/or Town Supervisor, bar owners and police from the campus and town?
What has been the history of student-related alcohol incidents in the community?

In terms of alcohol and other drug use and consequential behavior, in what ways does
your campus prepare students to be responsible community members?
(e.g. letter to off-campus students, commuter handbook, etc)

In what ways is your campus involved with local schools (collaborative prevention
partnerships)?
Do your Campus Police/Safety Officers work closely with community police departments?
(e.g. exchange of information, co-policing, response agreements, education)
Does your community have a ‘bar (tavern) owners association?’ Whether or not a formal
group exists, in what ways do you collaborate with local bar owners?
Have you attempted to create a Tavern Owner’s Agreement that limits high-risk
drink specials and advertising, and targets underage drinking?
Does the college and/or the community have a good working relationship
with the State Liquor Authority? (e.g. underage sales, over-occupancy laws, etc.)
